Greensboro’s own The SongBird Raven is proving that some of the most powerful voices are built through perseverance.
Born Raven Hooker, the singer, songwriter and performer describes herself as a young artist with an old soul. Her musical journey began at an early age, singing in talent shows, church choirs and radio competitions before eventually finding her way onto the open-mic scene. It was during an appearance at Boston’s House of Jazz in Greensboro that she was encouraged to pursue a career as a solo artist—a moment that helped launch The SongBird Raven. (Voyage Raleigh)
Her journey hasn’t always been easy. Raven has openly shared experiences that include becoming a mother as a teenager, facing homelessness and overcoming personal and financial struggles. Instead of allowing those experiences to stop her, she turned them into motivation—and ultimately into music. (Voyage Raleigh)
That emotion can be heard in songs like “Took Too Long” and “I’m Done” records that introduce listeners to Raven’s soulful style and personal approach to R&B.
For Raven, music is about more than simply singing. She describes her artistry as being rooted in authenticity, resilience and connection, using soulful melodies and storytelling to turn pieces of her personal journey into something audiences can feel. (Voyage Raleigh)
Her continued growth has also brought bigger opportunities, including a 2025 performance on FOX 8 WGHP, which Raven described as a proud moment in her career. Now, she continues expanding her audience through original music and live performances throughout North Carolina. (Voyage Raleigh)
The SongBird Raven has taken the challenges of her life and turned them into part of her song—and her story is still being written
