AZ Chike’s new album No Rest For The Wicked has arrived, but instead of the music being the only conversation surrounding the project, much of the online discussion has centered around one artist who isn’t on it: Kendrick Lamar.
Before the album dropped, anticipation grew that Kendrick could appear on the project. AZ Chike had shared images and footage connecting the two artists, and the possibility of a collaboration quickly became part of the album’s online buzz.
When No Rest For The Wicked officially arrived without a Kendrick Lamar feature, fans immediately began asking what happened.
Now DJ Akademiks and Adam22 have added even more fuel to the conversation.
Did The Kendrick Hype Become Too Big?
Adam22 reacted to reports that AZ Chike’s album was projected to move roughly 9,000 album-equivalent units during its opening week. The number circulating online is only a projection and not a final first-week sales total.
His reaction placed the spotlight directly on Kendrick and the expectations surrounding a possible collaboration.
DJ Akademiks also discussed the situation during his livestream, suggesting that Kendrick may have decided not to release a verse with AZ Chike.
There’s one major problem with that theory, however: there has been no confirmation that Kendrick actually recorded a feature for the album and later pulled it.
That distinction matters.
What is confirmed is that Kendrick was involved with AZ Chike during the creative process. Chike has spoken about Kendrick and producer Sounwave providing input while he worked on the project, and footage surfaced of Kendrick encouraging Chike to continue building and creating without overthinking the process.
When The Feature Becomes Bigger Than The Artist
The situation raises a bigger question about today’s music industry.
Can anticipation for a superstar feature actually hurt an emerging artist?
Once fans believed Kendrick might appear on No Rest For The Wicked, that potential collaboration became part of the story surrounding the album. When the feature wasn’t there, the conversation quickly shifted from “What does AZ Chike’s album sound like?” to “Where is Kendrick?”
That can be a dangerous position for an artist trying to establish his own identity.
A major feature can introduce an artist to millions of new listeners, but the marketing surrounding that feature can also overshadow the artist whose name is actually on the album.
In AZ Chike’s case, Kendrick’s absence has arguably generated nearly as much conversation as an actual Kendrick verse might have.
AZ Chike Still Has A Major Opportunity
The Kendrick conversation shouldn’t completely overshadow what AZ Chike accomplished with the project.
No Rest For The Wicked is a 14-track release featuring appearances from Tyler, The Creator and JMSN, while its production credits include established names such as Pharrell Williams, Hit-Boy and Terrace Martin.
Chike also entered this release with momentum from his growing Los Angeles following and appearances connected to projects from ScHoolboy Q and Kendrick Lamar.
So while social media may be focused on who isn’t on the album, the bigger test will be whether AZ Chike can turn the attention surrounding this rollout into listeners who stay for his music.
First-week numbers can create headlines, but building a lasting fan base is a much longer game.

Never allow a feature to become bigger than your project.
A collaboration with a superstar can be a powerful marketing tool, but the audience still has to connect with you. When an entire rollout becomes dependent on speculation surrounding another artist, the conversation can quickly move away from the music you’re trying to introduce.
Whether Kendrick Lamar was ever supposed to appear on No Rest For The Wicked remains unconfirmed.
But one thing is certain: people are talking about AZ Chike.
Now the question is whether that conversation turns into people pressing play.
